Did you know?

Husky is a general name for a type of dog used to pull sledges in northern regions.  The word originated as a term for arctic people in general. According to the Dictionary of Newfoundland English, English sailors called the native Eskimos “Huskimos,” which was shortened to Husky. The name later extended to their dogs.

Huskies have a genetic closeness to the grey wolf and are energetic and athletic, with a thick double coat – perfect for cold climates – that can be black, grey, white or copper-red. Many have striking blue eyes, although they may also be gray, brown or yellow.

You may notice that your husky loves to run. It’s no coincidence – huskies were literally bred to run. More than 3,000 years ago, the Chukchi people of Siberia needed to expand their hunting ground, so they decided to breed the ideal sled dog that could withstand cold and would display high endurance and be able to survive with little food.

How Do You Pick The Right Name?

After years of helping people pick the right pet name, here are some tips we’ve picked up when it comes to selecting a name for your dog:

  1. Does it roll off the tongue? Some names are awesome in theory but tough to pronounce in everyday life.
  2. Say it out loud. Can you imagine loudly calling for your dog with this name?
  3. Does it fit your dog? You might have the perfect name picked out but it doesn’t fit with your dog’s personality or appearance, that’s a miss.
  4. Trust your gut. When you find the right name, you’ll know it!
